Charlie is a medically trained serial biotech entrepreneur focused on data-driven preventative healthcare.
Charlie is a co-founder and Chairperson of Relation Therapeutics. In this role, he presented directly to Bill Gates in 2021 after the company won a Gates Foundation grant, collaborating closely with co-awardee and Turing Award winner Prof. Yoshua Bengio.
Charlie is one of the original two co-founders and Chief Growth Officer of Freenome, a Bay Area biotech company of ~500 people that has raised $1.1bn from leading investors in the industry including Fidelity, Janus Henderson, T.Rowe Price, RA Capital, Perceptive Advisors, strategic investors Roche and Novartis, as well as top tier VCs including GV, Andreessen Horowitz and DCVC. He was founding CEO (2014-2016) and has served in several roles including Chairperson.
Formerly, Charlie co-founded Yourgene Health (LSE: YGEN) and an immunotherapy company with the Nobel Laureate inventor of PCR. Charlie has advised investors including Oxford University's $800mn spin out fund, OSI (backed by GV and the founders of DeepMind), Juvenescence (a longevity-focused venture creation group that's raised $200mn and is led by the founders of Biohaven, a ~$10bn listed biotech), Anthem Digital Health group and undisclosed hedge/venture funds, as well as being a Senior Strategic Advisor to ARK Invest, Cathie Wood’s ~$30bn AUM investment and associated crossover funds.
Charlie enjoys research and directly building tech. He has published and co-published in Nature Reviews Genetics, Nature Communications, Briefings in Bioinformatics and other high impact journals, as well as NeurIPS AI/ML workshops. Charlie has also been interviewed and quoted in Nature Biotechnology and FT articles and participated as an X Prize 'Visioneer'. He is author on several issued patents and is a practitioner of deep learning, building models mainly in PyTorch.
